BFTW 2019 Community: Red Gum BBQ

Red Gum BBQ is Australia's largest craft beer & Southern-style BBQ joint located on the picturesque Mornington Peninsula. They are also the first B Corp certified restaurant in Australia. With an intense commitment to local and free range, Red Gum is the home of Aussie low and slow and GOOD business. We speak with Melissa Goffin to learn more about the business .



1. What makes your company Best For The World? We connect people, families, and bring together community around unique and wonderful BBQ. We are committed to exclusively using free range and bred free range meats and using recyclable materials throughout the business. We've created a series of ethical business forums, bringing together like minded businesses in our region to promote the values of B Corp.

2. What makes you stand out from other companies? Making the commitment to purpose over profit.

We never take the easy way out - we always uphold our values even when it means taking a hit on our margins. We are committed to sourcing ethically farmed and local produce, ensuring we are supporting like-minded businesses and serving only the best quality to our customers. We have created ethical business supplier agreements and hold our suppliers to account. 3. How do you plan to celebrate? BBQ + Beer = Good times! And we will be celebrating with both. Getting the team together to acknowledge the contribution that everyone makes to being the best for the world! We also love sharing, this is a story we can't wait to share with our Red Gum BBQ community (Insta 15K, FaceBook 11K, 5K in our database). They are a highly engaged bunch and love following our stories and being a part of our movement.

4. Part of being “Best for the World” is striving to always use your business as a force for good. What initiatives do you have planned for the coming year to continue to be Best for the World?

We look forward to increasing the momentum that our ethical business forums have generated and building a great community within our region of other businesses who also want to be Best for the World. We will continue to source products that will align with our business ethics and holds them to account. In this, creating unified partnerships with these suppliers, in order to more widely promote our shared values. And look for new ways to educate and promote our values to our growing community.

5. What advice do you have for other B Corps and purpose-led businesses that want to improve their impact?

Our advice to other B Corps and purpose-led businesses...Don’t worry about everything, just do your thing. Purpose exists in the cracks and crevices of all we do and there are a million ways to extend and deepen our impact. Connect your business purpose to a path, unique and boundless to your business and go in that direction.
