Guide to becoming a B Corp

4. How you're scored

There are two ways to get points as a B Corp.

OPERATIONAL

These make up 90% of the questions in the assessment and refer to how your business operates on a day-to-day basis.

You can earn operational points for:

  • Donating to charity on occasion

  • Having a diverse workforce

  • Using renewable energy

  • Recycling

IMPACT BUSINESS MODEL (IBMs)

IBMs are bonus points that companies that deliver high levels of social and or environmental impact may be eligible for. These questions are unlocked as you complete the assessment and you must meet high thresholds in order to earn these points.

You can earn IBM points for:

  • Having a 'buy one give one' model

  • Being a Worker Owned Cooperative

  • Providing educational products or services

  • Selling recycling services or technology

Scoringis based on five key themes.

  1. Objective: Determined by B Lab’s independent Standards Advisory Council

  2. Normalized: All companies can earn the same total points in the assessment

  3. Materiality Based: Determined by relative materiality of a particular topic to a company’s sector

  4. Outputs/Outcomes Oriented: More heavily weighted towards direct indicators of “impact”

  5. Balanced: Comparable scoring for Operational Impact and Impact Business Models, and across different Impact Business Models
